In an interview with Chris Wescott today, Edmonton Oilers head coach Todd McLellan confirmed that there will be a captain by opening night, Oct. 12. When prodded McLellan kept his lips sealed and only answered with., “We will have a captain”.
Last season, the Oilers did not have a captain after Andrew Ference stepped down to become an alternate captain. The team then decided to run with five alternative captains throughout the year, which were Ference, Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Matt Hendricks.
There has been a lot of talk that the next captain should be Connor McDavid.
