EDMONTON — Nail Yakupov had an invitation to attend the training camp Russia was staging in preparation for the world hockey championships, but it turns out the Edmonton Oilers winger also had a hip injury.
Yakupov has since been benched by the club’s medical staff.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, meanwhile, will not play for Canada.
He had said on Sunday that he had a cracked bone in his right foot, and that while he was hopeful he’d be able to play, he knew he was going to have to get the OK from the medical staff.
The club announced on Wednesday that Nugent-Hopkins would not be able to participate.
