The long wait for the Edmonton Oilers to play in another outdoor game is over. Sportsnet hockey analyst John Shannon tweeted today that the Winnipeg Jets will host the Oilers at Investors Group Field in October 2016.
Edmonton hosted the first-ever outdoor regular-season game in NHL history in 2003, dubbed the Heritage Classic, between the Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens in front of a crowd of 57,167 frozen fans took place at Commonwealth Stadium. The Canadiens went on to defeat the Oilers on that night by a score of 4-3.
Prior to the regular-season game, the 1980s Oilers and the 1970s Canadiens played an alumni game for the ages dubbed the Mega-Stars Game.
