As seasons go, the Edmonton Oilers’ 2017-18 edition couldn’t have gone much worse. After making the playoffs the year prior, winning a round for the first time since 2006, and raising the expectations of rabid Oilers fans, Edmonton management made a major trade – shipping forward Jordan Eberle to the New York Islanders for forward Ryan Strome – and more or less left the rest of the roster alone.
And the results were, to say the least, unsatisfactory: They lost 11 fewer games, fell from second place to sixth in the Pacific Division, and surrendered a half-goal more per game on average than they did in 2016-17.
