GAINESVILLE, Fla. — East Carolina made the Florida Gators and more than 88,000 of their supporters fret for nearly four quarters on Saturday night, but most of The Swamp’s patrons were in celebratory spirits at the 60-minute mark.
A duel between dual-quarterback teams took that long to decide, as visiting ECU briefly stole its second lead of the night early in the third quarter, then rallied again in the game’s dying minutes after the hosts reclaimed the lead. The Gators’ own second half surge that came in between proved to be the key in a 31-24 UF victory in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
