Keith was initially expected to serve as Blake Kemp’s primary back-up after Kurt Benkert torn his ACL a week before the season began. Keith did not see any action in Saturday’s game against Towson, but fellow back-up James Summers was seen warming up on the sidelines early during the fourth quarter.
Summers was a dual-threat quarterback in high school, but the Pirates recruited him as a wide-receiver. The junior impressed ECU’s coaching staff and, in just two weeks with the team, started taking reps with the first team.
Just as Summers joined the team, Keith was cleared to play after rehabbing a right elbow injury.
