Pirates win, take series

East Carolina baseball coach Cliff Godwin mentioned his batters looked anxious early in his team’s season-opening victory on Friday.

The Pirates were the complete opposite on Saturday, feasting on wild Longwood starting pitcher Tyler Wirsu to the tune of five early runs on the way to a 9-6 triumph over Longwood on Saturday afternoon inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Wirsu handed out six free passes in his 21⁄3 innings of work, and freshman Dwanya Williams-Sutton’s two-run double highlighted the Pirates’ four-run third inning that allowed them to seize control.

Longwood rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth, trimming what was previously a 9-1 deficit to 9-6 before closer Joe Ingle finally finished things off to clinch the series win.
