East Carolina’s quarterbacks played an unforgettable game of oneupmanship on Saturday afternoon, and Virginia Tech could do nothing to stop it.
After falling behind the Hokies 14-0 in rain-drenched Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, the ECU football team used its twin-engine QB attack to run roughshod over the Hokies in a tense 35-28 ECU triumph.
It marked the second straight season the Pirates have stung Tech, and the fifth straight game they have beaten an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent.
After starter Blake Kemp jump-started the rally with two touchdowns in two drives to tie the game, newcomer James Summers was a lightning bolt for the Pirates, electrocuting VT’s defense with long run after long run and a couple of deftly delivered throws that kept ECU (2-2) in the lead from early in the second quarter until the final whistle.
