Wednesday the East Carolina softball team broke the American Athletic Conference single-season home run record in its doubleheader against the Longwood Lancers as catcher Alex Mycek sent the ball soaring over the outfield wall for the Pirates’ 59th home run this season.
With six games left on the schedule, ECU has the chance to add on to the record its broke. With 59 home runs so far on the season, the Pirates have already broken their previous single-season record of 58, set in 2007. Mycek and infielder Meredith Burroughs are both key reasons to the Pirates’ success.
Coming off her redshirt sophomore season in which she hit just three home runs, Mycek has more than surprised in her redshirt junior season as she currently leads the team with 16 home runs, including six in one weekend, which earned her the honor of Louisville Slugger National Player-of-the-Week — the first in ECU history.
