The first quarter was relatively close as both teams exchanged baskets with each other, but Cincinnati had the edge at the end as it led 14-10 going into the second frame. The second quarter was even closer when it came to the scoring deficit, but the Bearcats outscored the Pirates 15-12 to carry a seven point lead going into halftime, leading ECU 29-22.
