For about half of Garrett Brooks’ managerial debut, his team was leading by double digits.
Brooks served as manager and leadoff hitter for the Gold team on Friday for the start of the East Carolina baseball fall Purple-Gold World Series, but it was a few of his draft picks earlier in the week who led the way to a 16-3 victory over the Parker Lamm-led Purple squad at Clark-LeClair Stadium. Game 2 is scheduled for today at 1 p.m. and Sunday’s finale is at 2.
Pirate rookie Wes Phillips, a junior college transfer and candidate to start at shortstop, had one of the biggest swings of the day with a two-run home run as part of his six-RBI day and cleanup hitter Jeff Nelson finished 2-for-2 with three walks and four runs scored.
