East Carolina started strong, and closed even better Friday night at No. 4 Virginia, scoring once in the top of the ninth inning and three times in the 10th for an 8-5 victory in the first game of a big early-season baseball series against the defending national champion Cavaliers.

The win, keyed by Charlie Yorgen’s sacrifice fly in the ninth and freshman Brady Lloyd’s go-ahead double the following inning, broke a nine-game losing streak for the Pirates (5-0) against Virginia.

Lloyd’s clutch hit bounced just in front of UVa. center fielder Adam Haseley with two runners on base and one out.
