In its first-ever trip to California, East Carolina’s basketball team put a scare into the Bears.
Mike Zangari tied his career high with 17 points and Caleb White added 15 but the Pirates’ upset bid fell short, 70-62, late Friday night in Berkeley, Calif. ECU shot just 32.7 percent from the field, but committed a season-low 10 turnovers while its defense helped force 15th-ranked Cal to give the ball away a season-high 15 times. The Bears, who had 17 total turnovers in their first two games, shot just 3-of-23 from 3-point range against the Pirates’ zone.
“If we had shot it better, we might have had a chance tonight because (the Bears) shot it so poorly," East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo said.
