The Pirates (7-5) kept close behind the Dukes (9-3) for the majority of the game, but failed to improve their lead further.
Senior forward Kanu Aja put the Pirates up 2-0 at the 19-minute mark in the first half after completing the first layup of the game.
At the end of the first half JMU entered its locker room leading ECU by one-point, 29-28.
Junior guard Caleb White led ECU to 42-41 lead after his back-to-back 3s, but JMU kept the lead, 53-51, after the Dukes’ Dimitrije Cabarkapa scored seven straight points.
