Entering the weekend series against the University of California at Los Angeles, East Carolina University had won three of its last four games and was ranked at No. 8 in the country. UCLA had also won three of its last four and was the No. 1 team in the nation.
UCLA swept the Pirates over the weekend giving ECU its first-weekend series loss of the season and ending its streak of seven-weekend series wins.
The Pirates (25-10, 8-1 AAC) were coming off two wins against the University of Houston during a three game weekend series and a weekday win against the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
