University Director of Athletics Jeff Compher made the announcement Friday afternoon that McNeill has been relieved of his duties.
“After deliberate evaluation, the decision has been made to move our football program in a different directing with new leadership,” Compher said. “We are appreciative of the hard work, dedication and contributions Coach McNeill and his staff have made to both East Carolina University and our community.”
The Pirates are 8-8 in their first two seasons in the American Athletic Conference and hold a 42-34 (.553) record under McNeill throughout his six-year tenure, with one bowl victory.
After posting a 5-3 record in the new conference last season, the Pirates finished in fifth place in the conference’s East Division this season, posting a 3-5 record.
