East Carolina came into its opening baseball series of the season with greater expectations than visiting Longwood and a likely confidence edge over the Lancers, who had a 22-34 record in 2015 while the Pirates won 40 games and had their season end in the NCAA tournament.
The Pirates did their part by finishing the series with a 5-3 victory at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Sunday for a weekend sweep.
ECU pitcher Jimmy Boyd bounced back from a rough first inning in which the Lancers scored twice for their first lead of the weekend by throwing four more clean frames for the victory.
