In a sports world constantly abuzz about what team is wearing which new uniform, things are changing at East Carolina.
The Pirates circumvented the Swoosh on Wednesday, announcing that by July of 2016 all ECU athletes will be wearing adidas instead of Nike. The university announced a 10-year deal with the equipment and apparel company that will pay the Pirates in excess of $16 million through the life of the agreement.
“What we were looking for was somebody that was willing to help us and someone who recognized our brand and was willing to help us expand our brand,” said ECU director of athletics Jeff Compher, who noted the soon-to-expire deal with Nike was roughly six years in length.
