Hairston has been the Pirates’ primary running back all season, filling the role as the primary yards earner on the ground when Blake Kemp is taking the snaps. With the senior back failing to consistently gain yardage, offensive coordinator Dave Nichol turned to Summers in order to open up the ground attack.
While Hairston didn’t create any big plays with his legs against Virginia Tech, the senior finished with just three yards on 15 carries, he played a major role in opening up the offense by serving as a run blocker.
“I'd rather have players that make the team great rather than a great player,” head coach Ruffin McNeill said.
