Mangum left the game late in the third quarter with a hamstring injury, calling on freshman Beau Hoge. The Pirates (3-3, 1-1 AAC) didn’t allow the inexperienced quarterback any success, helping the offense make a fourth quarter, game-tying surge.
Mangum then re-entered the game and led the Cougars (4-2) on a 75-yard touchdown march. The freshman passed for 54 yards on the drive, throwing each pass delicately. Mangum finished with 331 yards and three touchdowns, completing 24 of his 33 passes.
The Pirates began the game with junior James Summers behind center, who recorded his first ever start, as they jumped out to a 14-0 lead early into the opening quarter.
