Despite links to candidates with head coaching experience such as Gene Chizik and Brady Hoke — and possibly even some form of preliminary negotiations with them — East Carolina athletics director Jeff Compher reiterated Monday that Scottie Montgomery was the only coach to receive an official offer to be the Pirates’ next head football coach.
After an approval of Montgomery’s status as the Pirates’ 21st coach by the university board of trustees Sunday night, Compher introduced Montgomery at the Murphy Center on East Carolina’s campus on Monday, and he said after the main portion of the news conference that no other coach received an offer and Montgomery was “our top candidate.
