It’s hard to talk about ACC basketball without mentioning UNC’s Phil Ford.
He was one of the first great freshmen in the conference (freshmen ineligibility was still new when he arrived in Chapel Hill).
Not a great leaper, Ford was incredibly quick and a superb ball handler. Dean Smith put him in the driver’s seat of the Four Corners. For you kids, it was a delay offense (pre-shot clock) where four guys went to corners and the ball handler would dart in and out, either killing clock or waiting for an easy opportunity to score. With Ford, the offense worked brilliantly.
