Like Bob Lanier, Calvin Murphy came to the NBA from Niagara, not exactly a basketball hot spot.
And at just 5-9, you’d think Murphy would have been at a major disadvantage, but he more than held his own. And actually did much more than that.
One of Murphy’s surprise talents was baton twirling. He was world-class and that’s no joke.
And it helped him in unexpected ways as Sidney Wicks found out.
Wicks, a 6-9 forward, may have thought he would have an easy time in a fight with Murphy.
Big mistake.
Murphy hit him so many times so fast that Wicks gave up pretty quickly.
