Well this is a fun blast from the past: in 1978, the Maryland-NC State rivalry was one of the hottest in the ACC. Just a few years earlier, the two titans of the conference had been so good that the NCAA was essentially forced to expand the tournament field from 16 to 32. It was nuts that the #2 and #3 teams in the country couldn’t both go to the NCAA Tournament.
It stayed intense for a long time too. This game featured, among others, Hawkeye Whitney, Clyde Austin, Greg Manning, Buck Williams, Albert King and Ernie Graham.
