Duke opened Cameron Indoor Stadium (then named Duke Indoor Stadium) in 1940 which makes it 80 years old.
That’s an extraordinary life for a college arena but it’s nowhere near the oldest. For that matter, neither is Reynolds Coliseum, built in 1948or Phogg Allen Fieldhouse, which is relatively middle-aged since it debuted in 1955.
Interesting fact: both arenas were started when steel was essentially rationed by the government and both schools got around it by designating parts of the arenas as armories.
The oldest gyms are a lot older and some of them are truly beautiful, if not always on the outside then on the inside.
