Chris Corchiani and Rodney Monroe were a great backcourt for NC State from 1987-91 and they were a marketing dream with someone, probably at State, calling them Fire and Ice.
Corchiani was the heat, a fiery point guard, and Monroe was one cool customer who could really fill it up.
They caught the public imagination too. Monroe ended up NC State’s all-time scoring leader, passing the great David Thompson.
Corchiani was a very smart point guard who wasn’t necessarily that gifted, but who was relentlessly competitive and highly entertaining to watch.
One of his favorite tricks, which no one really picked up for some reason, was to rush by someone while bringing the ball upcourt and then stop while bending over low and drawing a foul on the defender.
