Bo Jackson was one of the greatest athletes in the history of American sports. He was as fine a running back as the NFL has seen and as a power hitter, Buck O’ Neill said he ranked with Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson.
He was forced to retire in 1991 after a hip injury ended his career and nearly cost him his leg (the injury that Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa recently was similar).
Jackson was diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the hip joint and had to give up both careers.
Watching him compete was a joyful thing.
