DURHAM, N.C. – Duke swimmer Matthew Whelan was selected to compete at the 2021 Men's NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, the NCAA announced on Wednesday.
Whelan, a junior out of Richmond, Va., earned a berth in the 200 butterfly after swimming a school-record time of 1:42.41 in the event at the UNC Last Chance on March 7. His time bested the previous school record by an impressive two seconds.
"Matthew has been working on his race strategy for the 200 fly all season and it came together on Sunday for a two-second drop from his time at ACCs," head coach Dan Colella said.
