Not all that long ago, Americans were getting used to the idea that Olympic basketball, which the U.S. dominated from its Olympic debut until 1972, when the U.S. was notoriously cheated, and then again from 1976 to 1984, was no longer our fiefdom.
The Yugoslavs were an incredibly good team and the Russians had some players too. Lithuania punched way over its weight and Spain, Italy and Brazil made waves. Even Greece and France had become powers.
In 1992, the U.S. introduced NBA players with the Dream Team and it seemed for a time that basketball was all ours again.
