PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The 2015 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships opened Saturday afternoon, with two members of the Duke women’s tennis team advancing beyond the second round of the pre-qualifying draw.
Freshmen Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin, competing in the pre-qualifying singles draw, each earned two wins to open the tournament. McCarthy required three sets to down Laura Gulbe of Pepperdine, but ultimately earned the 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 victory in her first match of the event. The Cary, N.C., native followed the performance with a 6-0, 6-0 rout of Rice’s Kathrine Ip.
