YEOSU, South Korea – Three days after securing qualification to her first Olympic Games, Blue Devil alumna Ashley Twichell added a top-eight finish in the women’s open water 5K event at the 18th FINA World Championships.
The 2011 Duke graduate was seventh in the 5K field with a time of 58:00.00. Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha claimed the world title (57:56.00), followed by France’s Aurelie Muller in second (57:57.00). Hannah Moore of the United States and Leonie Beck of Germany tied for third, sharing the bronze (57:58.00).
The top-eight showing was Twichell’s second of the World Championships, as she placed sixth over the weekend in the 10K (1:54.
