TOKYO – Facing the opening heat of the 400m at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, Duke track & field alumni Steven Solomon delivered a qualifying time to advance into the semifinals on Sunday.
Solomon was one of three automatic qualifiers from heat four based on finishing, setting a personal best of 44.94 seconds. Facing a challenging heat that included current world record holder Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa, Solomon finished second overall, behind only Anthony Jose Zambrano of Columbia to move on.
Solomon's run advances him to Monday's semifinal, where he will compete in the second of three heats.
