WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Strong doubles play from the Blue Devils highlighted day one of the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., as Duke’s duo posted a 2-0 mark to open the competition Friday morning.
Senior Alyssa Smith and redshirt sophomore Christina Makarova, competing alongside one another as a doubles team for the first time since November 2014, did not drop a match over the first two rounds of the three-day event. The Duke pair outlasted Davidson’s Anna Catharine Feaster and Ally Sexton, 8-7 (5), to start the day, before Smith and Makarova returned to the courts and defeated Richmond’s Brittany Boys and Lea Owens, 8-3.
