Smalley Shines on Day One of U.S. Amateur

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Rising sophomore Alex Smalley fired a bogey-free round on Monday on the first day of the U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club, finishing the day in a tie for second place to lead a contingent of five Duke players in the field.

The Wake Forest, N.C., native was two-under after three holes and used a run of three consecutive birdies just after the turn to post a five-under 65 on the day. Smalley will enter the final round of stroke play on Tuesday as part of a three-way tie just one shot behind Dawson Armstrong of Brentwood, Tenn.
