We thought he meant it. We thought when Mike Elko spoke of staying in Durham and building something special at Duke, he really meant it. And maybe he did.
The truth is that, $100 million, which is reportedly what A&M is offering him, would turn most people’s heads. That’s generational money. His future grandchildren should be fine and you can’t fault somebody for taking an opportunity.
But still. We thought he meant it. Apparently not.
So far, Nina King has an outstanding record as an AD, having hired both Elko and Jon Scheyer. Scheyer was an easy and obvious hire, not least of all because Mike Krzyzewski was firmly in his corner and helped to execute a brilliant transition plan.
