DURHAM, N.C. – Duke baseball senior Matt Mervis and junior Thomas Girard have taken the next step into professional baseball, as both signed free agent contracts earlier this week.
Mervis inked a deal with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday evening, while Girard signed with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. The two signings come off the heels of last week's Major League Baseball Draft, where junior Bryce Jarvis was taken with the 18th overall pick, marking the highest pick in Duke baseball history.
Mervis, an elected team captain of the 2020 squad, led the Blue Devils both on and off the field, ranking among the tops on the team across multiple statistical categories.
