New Duke women’s coach Kara Lawson announced her assistants Friday and it looks like a terrific staff.
She brings in Beth Cunningham, Winston Gandy and Tia Jackson.
Cunningham worked most recently for Notre Dame’s Muffet McGraw who recently retired and was also head coach at VCU. Gandy was at Rice and has also worked for Maryland and the Washington Wizards. And Jackson, previously an assistant at Duke at the end of the Goestenkors era, returns after a stint at Miami. Like Cunningham, she also has head coaching experience, in her case at Washington.
So really it looks like she has exactly what she needs as a woman who has never been a head coach: an outstanding recruiter, two former head coaches to mentor her and teach her the less glamorous details of the profession.
