We didn’t care much for Gary Williams when he coached at Maryland. He was not particularly likable. We remember one story where he berated a ballboy. His A.D., Debbie Yow, even ordered him into anger management therapy.
He was just not a particularly nice man, not that he cared (and there’s no reason why he should have).
Having said that though, we had great admiration for his ability to go his own way on the recruiting trail. He had an ability to pick up on recruits other coaches tended to miss.
The greatest guy like that he ever dug up was, without question, Juan Dixon.
