CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Duke junior Garrett Johns had his NCAA Singles Championship run come to an end Tuesday with a tough 7-5, 6-4, 7-5 setback to the NCAA Singles' defending national champion in Sam Riffice of Florida at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Ill.
Johns, who is ranked 49th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings, batted back-and-forth with the No. 28 ranked collegiate player in Tuesday's Round of 32. The opening set could have gone either way, but it was Riffice who came out on top, 7-5.
