DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke head football coach Shirley "Red" Wilson passed away on Friday at his home in Burlington at the age of 95.
Wilson served as the head coach of the Blue Devils from 1979-82, compiling an overall record of 16-27-1. Duke went 6-5 in each of his last two seasons under Wilson, and the Blue Devils closed out his coaching tenure with a 23-17 win over North Carolina at Wallace Wade Stadium on November 20, 1982.
Prior to Duke, Wilson served as the head football coach at multiple high schools in North Carolina and Virginia, compiling a 17-year overall record of 138-38-11 with three undefeated regular seasons, eight conference championships and two state titles (1958 & 1964; both at Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, N.
