DURHAM, N.C. – The past, present and possibly the future will collide Saturday when Duke meets No. 23 Virginia Tech at 3:30 p.m. at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The past will be represented by the celebration of the 75th anniversary of Duke’s 1942 Rose Bowl against Oregon State.
That game was played at Duke in response to Pearl Harbor, less than a month earlier. After the attack, the U.S. government canceled large gatherings on the West Coast. The venerable New Year’s Day game – the original bowl game – was going to be canceled – until Duke and Durham offered to host the affair on short notice.
