DURHAM, N.C. – In U.S. Women’s Open sectional qualifying Monday, Duke University incoming freshman Megan Furtney and 2018 Blue Devil graduate Leona Maguire each qualified for the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open at different sites.
With rounds of 73 and 74, Furtney earned one of two slots in the U.S. Open Elgin Country Club in Elgin, Ill. Furtney, who hails from St. Charles, Ill., will make her first appearance in a major in a few weeks, after recently winning the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship along with fellow incoming freshman Erica Shepherd. Furtney’s 36-hole ledger of 147 was boosted by seven birdies over the two rounds.
