DURHAM – Virginia's Dani Mendez-Trendler knocked in a rebound off a save from Duke's Piper Hampsch in the 74th minute to lift the eighth-ranked Cavaliers to a 2-1 double overtime victory against the No. 2 Blue Devils in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
The loss stops Duke's win streak at 11 games as the Blue Devils drop to 13-2 overall. Virginia improves to 9-5 on the year. It is the Blue Devils' first overtime loss in five contests this season.
Duke sophomore Alaina McVeigh had the goal for the Blue Devils, while Hampsch had four saves in goal.
