BLACKSBURG, Va. – Graduate student Brian McAfee turned in his sixth quality start of the season to lead Duke past Virginia Tech, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at English Field at Union Park.
McAfee allowed one run on seven hits over eight innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter, facing a three-ball count just twice in the game. McAfee retired 10 straight Hokie batters from the fourth to the seventh, inducing six groundball outs in that span.
“Unbelievable,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “Eight innings, no walks, five strikeouts. [He] did a great job of pitching to the bottom of the strike zone.
