Former Duke basketball standout Shelden Williams was destined to control the paint for the Blue Devils. As of Tuesday, though, he is now officially entering a future where he will wield his control from the bench.
Williams agreed to be an assistant on an all-new coaching staff for the NBA G League’s Erie BayHawks. This will be the former first-team All-American’s first job as a coach.
After his senior season at Duke in 2006 — he left as the program’s all-time leader in rebounds (1217) and blocks (422), earning a permanent home for his jersey number (23) in the rafters at Cameron Indoor Stadium — the Atlanta Hawks selected Williams with the fifth pick in the NBA Draft.
