Former Duke A.D. Joe Alleva, now running the show at LSU, has made two basketball hires before Monday: Trent Johnson and Johnny Jones. Johnson left LSU for TCU and Jones just washed out in Baton Rouge.
Whatever you think of Alleva, hiring coaches has not been his strong point. At Duke his football hires were a disaster. He hired Carl Franks and Ted Roof before hiring David Cutcliffe (with the assistance of a committee). His baseball hire, Bill Hillier, left Duke under a dark cloud when his players suggested they were pressured to use steroids.
His replacement, Sean McNally, was an honorable man but ultimately didn’t win enough to keep his job (he did, however, restore the program’s good name and Duke is in his debt for that).
