Back in the day, when Gene Banks first came to Duke, he was a total revelation. First, he was immensely talented, far beyond anything Duke fans had seen before. He sort of floated on the court, hence his nickname of Tinkerbell. He had a particular knack of being able to stand on the baseline, rear back and without moving or using his legs, dropping a pass over the defense to a teammate for a quick hit layup.
Occasionally that teammate was Kenny Dennard.
Both guys were charismatic bon vivants, larger than life figures at Duke who cast long shadows.
