CBS has a ranking up of the best Duke basketball teams but as so often is the case in these sorts of lists, there is a recency bias.
To be clear, there aren’t too many teams from before the Krzyzewski era that could qualify, but we’d say 1963, 1966 and 1978 should have been considered.
One of the great one-ifs, as Jim talked about recently, was what would have happened in 1966 had Bob Verga not been sick at the Final Four. Verga was a superb outside shooter who was a handful for anyone to guard and Mike Lewis would have matched up well with David “Big Daddy” Latin inside.
