DURHAM, N.C. – Two former Blue Devils, Brian Atkinson and Bo Waggoner, recently cemented their invitations to compete in the marathon at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for a chance to run at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Atkinson, while competing in the Monumental Half-Marathon in Indianapolis, Ind., Saturday, Nov. 7, maintained a 4:57 per mile pace over the 13.1-mile distance to clock a time of 1:04:45, dipping under the U.S. trials qualifying standard of 1:05:00 by 15 seconds. The 23-year old out of Melbourne Beach, Fla., placed fifth overall with his effort and was joined by six other competitors who also achieved the mark in the race.
