Alvarez Clinches Davis Cup Match for Peru

DURHAM, N.C. – Before playing his first fall match with the Duke men’s tennis team, junior Nicolas Alvarez helped his native country of Peru to a 3-2 victory against Venezuela in the championship match of the Davis Cup Group II Americas tournament. Alvarez, the youngest player on either squad, clinched the deciding point with a comeback 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory against Luis David Martinez.

In Peru’s July match against Mexico in the Davis Cup semifinals, Alvarez earned a pair of victories and finished 4-0 in Davis Cup action.

“I couldn't be prouder of Nico,” head coach Ramsey Smith said.
